Environmental Toxicity/Smog Exposure
How Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements May Help

Smog is normally made up of nitrogen & sulfur dioxides, ozone and tiny particles of things like soot that can irritate your lungs, eyes and more.  Many other chemicals are now present in our environment – from diesel fumes to carpet outgassing.  The best thing you can do it to try to avoid as much pollution and chemical exposure as you can.  However, chemicals are really everywhere in our lives today, so when you can't avoid it, like lots of us can't, antioxidants can be very helpful.

Common Symptoms

Itching, burning eyes, headaches, lung irritation & inflammation, coughing, asthma and more.  Smog and environmental pollutants can also kill cells and cause mutations in cells that can led to cancer.

Common Causes

Modern day living – jet, boat, car and other engine exhaust – as well as fires can cause smog and pollution.  Most people also have high levels of indoor air pollution in their homes and workplaces today, caused by chemicals from common building materials, carpets, furnishings, cleaning and personal care products.

Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutritional Supplements

Environmental pollution causes oxidation, and so all the antioxidant vitamins can be very useful in preventing and reducing problems.  These include Vitamins A, C & E, as well as green tea, Co Q-10, DHLA and the B vitamin complex.  Greens can also be really helpful for detoxifying, as can seaweeds and chlorella.  Zinc is also important for detoxification.*  Milk thistle seeds can help support and detoxify your liver, which can then work better to remove other toxins from your body in a timely and efficient manner.  Goji Juice seems to help neutralize the bad side effects of chemicals, toxins and poisons, and Noni Juice seems to help with detoxification.

Food Choices

The beta-carotene from any yellow or orange fruit or vegetable, like carrots, squash and melons can help protect you from lung cancer*.  Watch out – synthetic supplements of beta-carotene have actually shown the opposite to be true.  Miso soup with sea vegetables has also been shown to help neutralize environmental toxins.*   You can buy organic milk thistle seeds at your local health food store and grind them up in your coffee grinder.  If you are very sick, you might just want to start with a couple and work your way up to a couple teaspoons per day for a month or two.

Other Ideas

Try to avoid pollution if you can, and especially avoid heavy exercise on very smoggy days.  Eliminate all synthetic fragrances from your home, as these are made of petrochemicals.  They are found in laundry products, air "fresheners", body care and cleaning products.  Better yet, switch to organic body care and natural cleaners, including laundry products, to further reduce your chemical exposure.  If you can't make your house non-toxic overnight, try getting a good air purifier, like the IQ Air, and/or adding some plants to help purify the air.  Try to make your bedroom as toxin-free as possible, so your body can get rid of toxins at night instead of taking in more.  This means working your way towards a non-toxic mattress, bedding, pillows and sheets, and a hard floor surface like wood or tile, and no particle board furniture.

Use a good water filter for the water you drink and add shower and/or bath filters so you are not absorbing more toxins through your shower or bath.  Seaweed and dead sea mineral salt baths can be detoxifying, as well as adding vitamins, minerals or other nutrients to your body via your pores.
