Alzheimer's Disease
How Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements May Help*

Alzheimer's Disease is an insidious illness that can literally take away your life, and before that significantly lower your quality of life in your advancing years.  It affects over 4 million Americans and its incidence is on the rise.

Common Symptoms of Alzheimer’s

Loss of memory, inability to take care of self, personality changes, confusion and poor judgment and loss of touch with reality.

Common Causes of Alzheimer’s

The jury is still out as to what causes Alzheimer's Disease, but some researchers have implicated excessive heavy metal accumulations in the brain, such as mercury and aluminum.  Researchers do know that microscopic plaque that builds up in the brain is found in Alzheimer's patients, and that these plaques somehow contribute to memory loss and loss of cognitive skills.

Many researchers also feel that free radical damage contributes to Alzheimer's and so whatever you can do to reduce those free radicals by increasing your antioxidant vitamin intake by diet and/or nutritional supplements may help you prevent or slow down Alzheimer's.*  Poor circulation seems to be another factor.

Vitamins, Minerals & Nutritional Supplements

Some studies have shown that vitamin E and vitamin B1 (thiamine) may help to prevent and/or slow down the progression of Alzheimer's.  Heavy metal detoxification is also recommended, such as with chlorella, as well as taking antioxidant supplements.  Lecithin or phosphatidyl choline seems to keep the brain functioning better.  Ginseng, gotu kola and ginkgo biloba are herbs with a history of keeping circulation and brain function up.  Antioxidants have been recommended for prevention.  Some good antioxidants include Vitamin C, DHLA.  There are also a lot of antioxidants in Goji Juice & Mangosteen Juice, so they can be useful as nutritional supplements as well.

Recommmended Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements*:

  • Vitamin E
  • B Complex
  • Co Enzyme Q-10
  • Heavy Metal Detox (chlorella or cilantro based seems to be most effective)
  • Chlorella
  • Phosphatidyl choline or Lecthin
  • Brain Complex
  • Vitamin C Complex
  • DHLA
  • Goji 100 Juice
  • Mangosteen 100 Juice

Food Choices for Those With Alzheimer’s

For prevention, it is important to eat food high in antioxidants, as well as those high in the B vitamins and the amino acid tryptophan*.  Antioxidants are found in lots of fruits and vegetables, B vitamins in whole grains, nutritional yeast and liver, and tyrptophan is in turkey, bananas, dairy products and avocados.

Other Ideas

Avoid fluoridated water at all costs.*   It has been shown to increase aluminum absorption by over 600%!  If you tap water is fluoridated, you need to either drink and cook with bottled water only or get a water filter that takes out fluoride, like the CZ-UC-2KF, offered at EcoViva for about $300.  Fluoride filters are a bit expensive, but well worth the money in our opinion if you have fluoride in your water supply.

Try to stay away from aluminum-based deodorants and aluminum pots and alumimum and alum-containing foods or drugs*.  You also might want to think about having your mercury amalgam fillings replaced with composites*.  Just make sure that the composites do not have any alumimum in them (lots of them do!).  One that does not, to our knowledge, as of this writing (03/07) is Herculite.  Last, but not least, in addition to eating vitamin and antioxidant rich foods and adding some vitamin supplements to your diet, exercise your body and your brain, even into old age*!
