Allergic Rhinitis - Hayfever
How Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements Can Help*

Allergies are simply when your immune system overreacts to substance like pollen and cat dander – they are treated like a foreign, dangerous substance.  Most medications only mask or reduce symptoms, they are not fixing the problem.  In fact, the longer you take them, the more you seem to need them.  This may be because they tend to use up your vitamin C supply, further lowering your immune system.

Common Symptoms of Allergies

Itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, sore, irritated throat or coughing attack.  Chronic lung or sinus infections and headaches are also common.

Common Causes of Allergies

The cause, is really your body overreacting as explained above, but this can in turn come about from adrenal exhaustion, excessive free radical damage, stress, candida albicans overgrowth or and essential fatty acid deficiency.  Many researchers have noted that those with strong immune systems are less likely to get allergies, so whatever you can do to boost your immune function may be helpful, as in adding vitamins to your diet, whether they come from your foods, from food-based vitamin supplements, or both.

Vitamin, Mineral & Nutritional Supplements

Natural vitamin C with bioflavinoids seems to help tame allergic reactions, and can be especially helpful if you take it on a regular basis before you are exposed to the offender*.  That means for spring allergy season, to start taking vitamin C before the season begins.  Other antioxidants like DHLA and vitamin E might also be helpful*.  In addition, magnesium has been shown to help  bronchial spasms and to ease breathing, and vitamin A, selenium and zinc have been shown to help you have a healthy mucous membrane which will help shield cells from direct contact with airborne allergens*.

A vitamin and mineral-rich green drink or supplement has also been shown to be useful, as well as an adrenal complex to help the adrenal glands, stinging nettle tea and gingko biloba*.  If you suspect that an EFA deficiency is causing you problems, you might want to add EFA oils and/or cod liver oil.  Some people have also used co-enzyme Q-10 effectively.

Mangosteen Juice has also been shown to help with allergies, just make sure and get a product like Mangosteen 100 that is pure mangosteen juice, with no added preservatives or other juices.

Recommended Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements*:
  • Vitamin C Complex (make sure you get a natural one full of bioflavinoids for the quercetin)
  • Vitamin B Complex
  • Vitamin E Complex

  • Essential Fatty Acids Oil and/or Cod Liver Oil

Food Choices for Those With Allergies*

As usual, an unrefined diet is helpful, along with adding*:

  • Vitamin C and bioflavinoid-rich foods like broccoli, red peppers and citrus fruits.
  • Vitamin A rich foods like cod liver oil, liver and butter and cream from grass fed cows.
  • Magnesium rich foods include nuts, whole grains, beans and leafy green vegetables.
  • Cantalope is naturally high in quercitins.

Other Ideas for Those With Allergies

A good air filter like the IQ Air or Austin Air brands can be helpful, especially during allergy season, although they are not cheap.  (In fact, the cheap ones usually don't help much at all.)  Some people have experienced relief by taking a teaspoon or so of (local) bee pollen starting before allergy season for 2-4 weeks.  This can even make your allergies go away for several seasons or more.  You can usually find local bee pollen at your local health food store in the refrigerated section.  You might want to look for some vitamins & nutritional supplements there, but be careful to only get ones that are free of toxic fillers and synthetic ingredients.
