Migraine Headaches
How Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements May Help

45 million Americans are reported to suffer from headaches every year, although not all of them are as bad as migraines.

Common Symptoms

Very bad head pain, often accompanied by sensitivity to light and noise, nausea and even vomiting.

Common Causes

Certain foods and chemical additives can be triggers for migraines.  These include nitrites used as a preservative in all conventional cured meats, MSG, aspartame, chocolate, alcohol and sometimes caffeine, especially an excess of caffeine.  Some people are also sensitive to the amino acid tyramine, found in aged cheese, peanuts, beans, chicken livers and fresh baked goods made with yeast.

Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutritional Supplements

Dr. Altura says that 50-60 percent of migraines seemed to be linked to magnesium deficiency, which is widespread in America today.   Vitamin B complex also seems to help migraine sufferers*, especially the riboflavin, but we do recommend that you take the B complex together so as not to upset the balance.  Hormonal imbalances, especially for women, can bring on a migraine, so any supplement that helps to balance your female hormones might be useful, such as an herbal complex and/or Goji Juice.*

Recommended Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements*

  1. Coral Calcium (Calcium + Magnesium in a 2:1 ratio plus trace minerals)
  2. Magnesium Glycinate
  3. B Complex Vitamins
  4. Hormonal Balancing Supplements, like Quantum's Fem Balance
  5. Feverfew and Butterbur
  6. C Complex Vitamins
  7. Goji 100 Juice
Food Choices

Take a glass of carrot /celery juice at the first sign of a migraine.  Avoid nitrates, MSG, aspartame, red wine and other foods that seem to give you migraines.  High magnesium foods like whole grains and leafy greens and sea vegetables are good, as are vitamin C rich foods.

Other Ideas

Avoid smoking and secondary smoke, as it constricts the blood vessels.  In addition to the vitamins and minerals suggested above, ice packs on the neck can help by drawing the blood out of the head.
