Infertility
How Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements May Help

About 1 in 6 couples now has trouble conceiving.  Some figures are up to 25% now!  Not that long ago the figure was 1 in 10.  This means that the couple has been trying for more than 1 year with no luck to conceive a baby.   Nutritional problems and increasing exposure to chemicals both seem to have a lot to do with the rising infertility problems.

Common Symptoms of Infertility

Inability to have a child.

Common Causes of Infertility

There are undoubtedly many reasons for this increase in the number of couples not being able to conceive.  They include increased stress in our modern life, smoking and alcohol use, increased chemicals that we are exposed to and a significant decrease in nutrients like vitamins in our diets.  All these things can upset our hormonal and metabolic balance and make us infertile.  In addition, both a physical obstruction and/or chlamydia can be a cause for both men and women.  Birth control pills can cause a hormonal imbalance that affects women, and men seem to be especially affected by radiation or heavy metal poisoning or steroid use.

Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutritional Supplements

Many vitamins as well as the mineral zinc for men, are important for fertility.  These vitamins include A, B, C, D & E.  A lack of vitamin C seems to make the sperm clump together and hence make it harder for one to get free to fertilize the egg.  Goji Juice is very high in vitamin C.  A lack of zinc in men is a problem since zinc is so important in the production of testosterone, which in turn can affect sperm count.  Zinc also affects sperm motility, and low zinc levels may keep the sperm from reaching the egg.  Carnitine, an amino acid found in red meat, can increase sperm count and motility.

The fat soluble vitamins A and D have traditionally been known to be very important in fertility and reproduction, and are notoriously low in most of our diets today.  Vitamins A & D are found mostly in often "vilified" foods like butter, cream, liver and shellfish.  They can also be found in cod liver oil, especially the high vitamin type.  Various herbal therapies can also help to balance out the hormones.*

Food Choices

An organic, nutrient-dense diet can be very helpful for those trying to get pregnant, as well as for the baby if you do get pregnant.  In fact, following a diet like this for at least 1 year before trying to conceive is a good idea.*  As mentioned above, eggs, butter, cream, liver, red meat, oysters and other food rich in vitamins A & D and zinc can all be very helpful, especially if they come from pastured or wild animals eating their natural diet.  Avoiding junk food and processed foods is especially important for parents-to-be.

Other Ideas

Women who are underweight often have too little estrogen and women who are overweight too much estrogen to conceive, so keeping to a normal weight is a good idea.  Men who are underweight tend to have low sperm counts, and overweight men tend towards high estrogen and low testosterone levels, which can lead to low sperm production as well.  With men, it takes 3-4 months for the production of a new batch of sperm, so it can take a while after reaching your ideal weight before you become fertile again.

There is also some research that alcohol is toxic to the reproductive tract, so anything more than light drinking may impair fertility in both men and women.

Try to get some regular mild exercise every day.  Don't smoke and avoid secondary smoke as well as pollution and smog and other chemicals.  Try to make your bedroom a "chemical-free haven."  Get a non-toxic mattress and replace carpet with hard flooring.  Get rid of conventional toxic household cleaners as well as body care products.  Men who are trying to conceive should avoid electric blankets, hot water beds and taking long hot baths.  They should also try to avoid excess chemicals on the job if at all possible.

Last, but not least, in addition to making your diet rich in vitamins and minerals, and perhaps adding some nutritional supplements, you need to try to relax and eliminate as much stress as you can from your life.
