Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
How Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements May Help

Common Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue

Those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are not just tired, they are so exhausted that they have a hard time getting up out of bed on many days.  They have a hard time functioning with any degree of normalcy.  They often have other symptoms such as a sore throat or aching muscles, fever and various memory and cognitive problems.

Common Causes of Chronic Fatigue

Researchers still only have theories about what causes CFS – some say it is caused by the same virus, Epstein-Barr, that causes mononucleosis.  Others say it is associated with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS).  It does appear that those with a weakened immune system are more likely to be affected.  Widespread steroid or antibiotic use, a depletion in the diet of magnesium and other minerals, as well as vitamins, can also weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible.

Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutritional Supplements

Nutritional therapies, including vitamins and other nutritional supplements seem to be more effective than medication*, and anything that boosts the immune system can help*.  Be patient, it can take up to a month to notice any improvement and 3 to 6 months for considerable improvement.   Many people even achieve near normal functioning within 2 years.

Since magnesium is involved in the body's production of cell energy, and so is co-enzyme Q-10, they are both important nutrients for those with CFS*.  Antioxidant vitamins have also proven helpful to some CFS patients*, and so it is important to get enough vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene and selenium*.  DHLA and green tea are also great antioxidants, and green tea also seems to boost immune function.  Chlorella is also very good for the immune system and can be taken alone or as part of a good greens mix.  Goji Berry Juice and Acai Berry Juice are reportedly good for fatigue, and Mangosteen and Noni are good for chronic diseases of all sorts*.  All four of these juices are supposed to help to strengthen immunity*.  Noni and Milk thistle extract are good for detoxifying*, and reishi mushrooms good for both the liver and helping to build up your immune system*.

Food Choices

It is important for those with CFS to eat a healthy, whole food diet that is as nutrient-dense as possible, full of vitamins and minerals*.  It is also important for them to avoid white sugar* as it has been shown to depress the immune system.  Try to avoid any foods you might be allergic to and cut back on caffeine as well.  It may be tempting when you are tired all the time to reach for that latt, but too much caffeine can cause adrenal exhaustion and deplete minerals in your body, just making the situation worse.

Other Ideas

Light exercise, even when you are tired, like a 20 minute walk, can be helpful to get the lymph system going.  So can stretching and massage.  Sunlight on your skin for vitamin D is also important.  It is important, if at all possible, to avoid tobacco in all forms as it depresses the immune system.  It takes up to 3 months to rebuild immunity after quitting tobacco use, so just keep at your vitamin and mineral rich diet, and keep taking those immune-boosting vitamin supplements.
