I know this is a website about vitamins, but real, nutrient dense foods in an ideal world would contain all the nutrients we need!  However, most of us know that we no longer live in an ideal world, and even most organic food is missing nutrients, maybe even some from your very own garden.  In addition, today we have higher requirements for certain vitamins and minerals and perhaps especially antioxidants,  because of all the toxins in the world around us.  Our bodies use up nutrients to detoxify things that are bad for us, and so the more toxins we are exposed to, the higher levels of certain nutrients, including vitamins and minerals are required.

Buy Farm-Fresh, Nutrient-Dense Food Whenever Possible:  Higher in Vitamins

If you want to try to get most of your nutrients from your food, you need to find supplies of nutrient-dense, organic, farm-fresh food.  This type of food is naturally higher in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and many other nutrients.  Most food that we buy in the supermarket is processed, and even the fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat products are often missing nutrients.  Most “fresh” produce is picked before it is ripe and it may have been days or even weeks from when it is picked until you bring it home.  Antioxidants and antioxidant vitamins like Vitamin C and the B Vitamin Complex tend to diminish rapidly while produce is sitting on a shelf.

Food that is not organic has been shown to have higher levels of pesticide and herbicide residue, and dairy and meat products often contain antibiotics.  Conventionally raised animals often do not get their natural diet and hence the meat or dairy or eggs from them do not have the right composition of fats and are lower in nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin D and Vitamin E.

Vitamin Supplementation:  If You Can’t Find Enough Grass-Fed Nutrient-Dense Foods

Let’s face it, very few of us today get enough vitamins and minerals from our foods.  In order to compensate for that, the best option we know of is to take one or even a few high quality food-based nutritional supplements like a greens product or seaweed supplement that is high in vitamins and minerals.  That is partly why we developed this website, we don’t think there are very many people today who are receiving all the nutrients they need from their food, no matter how hard they try!  In addition, you are literally being assaulted every day by the increasing number of chemicals in our modern world, and in order for your body to detoxify those chemicals, you need nutrients, especially minerals and amino acids along with various vitamins and antioxidants.

One of the most important nutrients to make sure you are getting enough of is the trace minerals.  Did you know that your body cannot properly use the vitamins that you ingest if you do not have enough of certain minerals?   Seaweed is not commonly consumed in this country, but it is a powerhouse of trace minerals, including iodine and selenium which are both critical in immune function and many more essential functions in the body.

If you don’t like eating seaweed, try a high quality organic supplement like our highly recommended Superfood From the Sea - Emerald Sea™.  The nutrients found in Emerald Sea help to support many different body functions.  This is because the sea vegetables it contains are full of many nutrients, including trace minerals, antioxidants, omeEmerald Sea Trace Mineralsga 3’s, phytonutrients and much more!  Sea vegetables are 10-20 times more nutrient dense, compared to plants that grow on land.  This is important, because one of the difficulties of food-based supplements is that you need a lot of them to make a difference!  But taking 1 or 2 capsules with each of your 3 daily meals, you can get the benefit and nutrients that are the equivalent of taking 10-40 land-based vegetable capsules.  So it’s not only less expensive, but more effective.

For many thousands of years, cultures who incorporated sea vegetables into their diets attributed this consumption to their overall good health and their long life spans!  In addition to better health in general, certain seaweeds have been shown to help people to lose weight, and especially the abdominal fat which seems to be more dangerous.  The iodine contained in seaweed is a vital nutrient for optimal thyroid function, and thyroid problems seem to be an underlying factor in many who have weight issues today.  Fucoidan in brown seaweeds has been shown in research to dissipate cancer cells within 72 hours.  Alginates in seaweeds are well known for thier ability to offer protecvtion from radiation and evneionmental pollutatnats, ans well as bind with heavy metals such as lead and mercury.  So what are you waiting for?  More on Emerald Sea

Products May Have Vitamins Many of Us Need:  Fat Soluble Vitamins

Many people are trying to stay away from animal products, but for many of us who are not that healthy, we may need some animal products because they include many nutrients that can be used directly by the body without any type of conversions, including the fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A.  For example, plant-based omega3 fatty acids like flax seed oil can only be used by the body if you are able to convert them into the form your body uses.  But the omega3 fatty acids in pastured eggs or beef or wild salmon can be used directly by the body.

Beta-carotene is similar - it must go through a conversion process before your body can use it as vitamin A.  Many products these days are labeled as containing vitamin A when in fact true vitamin A is only found in animal products, not vegetables.  If you are someone who does not convert beta-carotene well to Vitamin A, you may need to eat some animal products that are high in Vitamin A or take a Vitamin A supplement.

By the way, for those who still think that animal fats or saturated fats cause heart disease, that is really misinformation, widespread as it may be.  Many people were traditionally nourished for centuries with large amounts of saturated fats, from things like bacon, butter, whole milk and coconut oil.  But heart disease was practically unheard of until the introduction of things like vegetable oils, hydrogenated fats, homogenized dairy products and large amounts of white refined sugar came into our diets.  For much more on this, check our sister website:  Healthy Eating Rx.

Whey Protein Powder: Powerful Benefits For Your Health!

Another animal-based food that has been shown to have many benefits is Whey Protein Powder.  A high quality whey protein powder contains all the essential amino acids and has many powerful health benefits, including:

  • Boosts antioxidant production (glutathione)*
  • Has nutrients essential for a well-functioning immune system*
  • Boosts endurance as well a energy, everyday as well as in sports*
  • Assists in removing various toxins and chemicals from your body*
  • Support weight management and healthy metabolism*
  • Helps maintain healthy blood pressure and blood sugar levels*
  • Helps you age well and can boost mental clarity and mood*

You can get whey protein from grass-fed dairy products, but if you are having a hard time finding high quality grass-fed dairy products, or don’t like the tart taste of whey, you can purchase a whey protein powder supplement, but watch out!  Most whey protein powder supplements out there are made from denatured whey, which cannot give you the benefits you need.  You must look for a whey protein that contains NO damaged proteins that is cold processed from fresh raw milk.  It is also important that nothing artificial or synthetic is added, and that it is tested to be free from heavy metals and especially radioactive pollutants.  In our research, we have found one we can recommend.  For more info, go to our Whey Protein Powder Webpage.

Omega3 Fatty Acids

Omega3 fatty acids are another nutrient that so many Americans are deficient in.  You can get them from some plant foods, but only if you are healthy will your body make the conversion to the nutrients you actually need.  In animal foods, omega3s are abundant in fatty fish, but often these are contaminated with PCBs and heavy metals like mercury.  As a supplement, fish oil and cod liver oil are abundant in omega3 fatty acids.  So is green-lip mussel oil, which is more easily absorbed and used by the body than the fish oil or cod liver oil.  It also has a much higher anti-inflammatory potency, so if you battle with some type of inflammation in the body, it might be worth the extra cost to try a good greenlip mussel oil supplement.  The one we recommend is Moxxor.
